The Neo era: Japanese sets (1999–2001)

The Neo era brought Johto, Dark & Light Pokémon and Baby Pokémon to the Japanese TCG — and introduced the Shining ultra-rare mechanic that pre-dated today's alt-art chase cards. Six main sets, 1999–2001, 11 cards per standard booster.

Main sets

  • Gold, Silver, to a New World… — 21 Dec 1999. Johto debut; internationally split into Neo Genesis.
  • Pokémon Deck 1 / Pokémon Deck 2 — small supplemental decks released alongside the opening Neo sets.
  • Crossing the Ruins… — 2000. Int'l: Neo Discovery.
  • Awakening Legends — 2000. Precursor to Neo Revelation.
  • Darkness, and to Light… — 2001. Int'l portions in Neo Destiny.
  • Expedition transition products — late 2001.

Collector note: Shining Pokémon from the Neo era (Shining Charizard, Shining Mewtwo, etc.) are among the most iconic chase cards in the entire TCG history. Sealed Neo product is extremely rare today; prices climb each year.
