The e-Card, VS and Web eras: Japanese sets (2001–2002)

Between the Neo era and the ADV reboot sits one of the strangest chapters in the Japanese TCG: the e-Card (e) sets, which included dot-code strips at the bottom of the card so that the Nintendo e-Reader peripheral could unlock animations, mini-games and extra move text. Alongside were two smaller sub-series: VS (rival-trainer themed, late 2001) and Web (promo distribution via web campaign, 2001).

e-Card (2001–2002)

• e1 — Base Expansion Pack — 21 Dec 2001. International counterpart: Expedition Base Set.
• e2 — The Town on No Map — Mar 2002. Int'l: Aquapolis.
• e3 — Wind From the Sea — Jul 2002.
• e4 — Mysterious Mountains / Split Earth — Sep 2002. Int'l: part of Skyridge.
• e5 — Rulers of the Heavens promo bundle — late 2002.
• Entrance Pack — introductory product for new e-Reader players.

VS (2001)

The VS series was built around rival-trainer themed cards (Erika, Sabrina, Blaine, Giovanni, etc.) with alternative artwork. Short-lived but iconic: just two main sets, bundled with starter decks and vending-machine releases.

Web (2001)

The Web series distributed exclusive promo cards via Pokémon's web campaign in Japan, with holographic finishes different from retail sets. Only a handful of cards reach the market today, and they are highly collectible.

Collector note: e-Card sets with intact dot-code strips are specifically prized because they still work with a functional Nintendo e-Reader. Expedition-era sealed products rarely surface.
